Overcoming

Pastor: David Weber Series: Stand Alone Sermons Scripture: Joshua 11:1–15

“I feel sorry for you.”  These were the concluding words of a conversation I had a few years back. I was trying out the whirlpool at the Y when an older gentleman joined me. I struck up a conversation with this man which he quickly took in the direction of a complaint. He was giving me a laundry list of complaints about our country and the world in general. Things like foreign policy miscues, the poor state of the economy, the lack of good jobs, and the general decline of the moral character. And he ended with “I feel sorry for you.”

Unfortunately, this is the way many of us look at the future. We give in to hopelessness and believe that things can only get worse. However, Christians are to be people of hope, not of despair. We are to be a people who see a future of victory and not defeat.

Over the past year and a half, the world at large and our church, in particular, has experienced many hardships. There are countless reasons to be pessimistic about the future. Nevertheless, as Christians, we have been given a promise that our sovereign Lord will win the victory and that through Christ we will be more than conquerors. Yes, there are hardships in this life, but what we will see from God’s word this week is that through trust in God’s purpose, God’s promise, and God’s savior, every Christian will overcome the hardships of this world and will receive life everlasting. To come prepared for the sermon take time this week to read and to meditate upon Joshua 11:1-15, Exodus 14:16-18, Psalm 97:1; 135:6, Romans 8:37-39, and 2 Corinthians 1:20

As we gather to worship our loving Father this Lord’s Day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “Praise My Soul The King Of Heaven.” the Acclamation of Praise “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” and the Hymn of Response “Blessed AssuranceLet us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
