A Hearing Heart

Pastor: David Weber Series: Stand Alone Sermons Scripture: Proverbs 2:1–3

It has happened more times than I would like to admit. April says, “Make sure to pick up the kids from school today.” And I respond, “What? I didn’t know I was going to be picking up the kids today?” Of course, April is very patient when she reminds me, “David, we talked about this last night. You said that you would be fine to pick them up.” At which point I vaguely recall that we had a conversation and that I agreed to do something.

Listening is not always an easy task. You know that you are hearing the words but many times hearing doesn’t equate with listening. To listen you have to give your attention. You have to think about the words. You have to allow them to sink in. However, we are often too busy to take the time to listen to the plans, to read the emails, or to write down the appointments. Life has become too full to truly listen.

In our passage for this Sunday morning the Word of God speaks to a people who need to learn how to listen. Not merely to conversations and text messages but more importantly who need to listen to the word of God. And what we will see in our text is that if we would listen and hear the word of God we must receive the Word of God, we must keep the Word of God, and we must pray to truly understand the Word of God. To come prepared for the sermon take time this week to read and to meditate upon Proverbs 2:1-22, 1 Kings 3:9-12, Proverbs 18:2, Romans 10:17, 1 Corinthians 2:11-14, and Hebrews 6:1-3

As we gather to worship our loving Father this Lord’s Day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “Christ is Made the Sure Foundation,” the Acclamation of Praise “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less,” and the Hymn of Response “How Firm a Foundation.Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
