Why is the New Covenant a better covenant? Throughout the book of Hebrews, the author has continually explained the superior nature of Christ’s ministry. His ministry is superior to the angels, to Moses, to Joshua, to Aaron, and to the Levites. In chapter eight the author transitions to speak of the superior nature of the covenant established through the work of Jesus. His point is clearly stated in verse 6 from last week’s sermon text, 

“But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better since it is enacted on better promises” (Hebrews 8:6 ESV).

The New Covenant is better than the Old Covenant because the promises that it makes are better.

When buying something online, the comparison tool is always very helpful. For example, if you are buying a new computer you can line up all the features and determine which choice is better. This computer has more memory but this one is cheaper. This computer has a better screen resolution but this one is lighter weight. When you see all your choices side by side it makes your choice much easier. 

In our passage for this Sunday the author is helping us to see that when you compare the Old Covenant with the New, your choice becomes clear. The New Covenant is far superior to the Old. In fact, the Old Covenant is becoming obsolete because of the greatest of the New Covenant. And what we will see in our text is that the New Covenant is superior to the Old because it promises, inward transformation, full exoneration, and eternal restoration. To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and to meditate upon Hebrews 8:7-13, Exodus 6:7, Deuteronomy 30:6, Psalm 103:12, Jeremiah 31:31-34, Romans 12:2, 2 Corinthians 3:18, and this article on the New Covenant. 

This week we will celebrate the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper during our worship service. As we receive the elements of bread and wine look in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ. For as we physically receive the signs of the Lord’s body and blood, spiritually we feed upon him and all his benefits.
