A Final Word

In a world of limitless information and opinions, how is one to ever know what is true? An average person two hundred years ago was exposed to very little information on a daily basis. He may have had access to a local newspaper or the occasional political pamphlet. Exposure to national news, let alone international news, however, would have been limited. Obviously, he did not have radio, television, or the internet. For better or for worse he would have to form his opinions based on a few select sources. Today, however, we have instant access to limitless information. We listen to radio news, watch the nightly recap on television, and listen to various podcasts on our phones. We hear conflicting stories about what has occurred and unnumbered views on those conflicting stories. The sheer amount of information is more than any one person could synthesize and develop into a clear understanding of the world. This situation leaves each of us with many questions. How do you know what is right? How do you know what is true? How do you know what is good? How do you know what is the right response to the information that you have received? We can become paralyzed by a flood of words.

In our passage for this Sunday, we begin a new sermon series on the book of Hebrews. The author is writing to a group of believers who are trying to understand conflicting opinions and information. They are trying to understand how their faith in Christ relates to the work of God in the Old Testament. They have received various teachings that have caused them to waiver. It has caused them to second guess if Jesus and his gospel is enough or if they need to return to the ceremonies and practices of the Old Testament. What the author reveals is that amid the various opinions, there is a final word that has been given. A word that brings clarity and fulfillment to all that has gone before. A final word on what is true. And what we will see in our text is that if we would know the one truth in a world of limitless opinions we must believe, understand, and trust God’s final word given in Jesus Christ. As we gather to worship the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit this Lord’s day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise, “I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art,” the Acclamation of Praise, “Before the Throne of God Above,” and the Hymn of Response, “All Creatures of Our God And King.” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
