Why the Law?

As we have continued our study of Galatians, we have continually seen Paul’s defense of justification by faith apart from works of the law. He has defended the gospel from the assault of those who would have the Galatians keep the law’s command of circumcision. Paul’s argument seems to imply that the law is contrary to the gospel. As such one might assume that the law is of no use or purpose. However, in our passage for this week, we see that Paul comes to the opposite conclusion. The law has a purpose in the history of redemption. It has an abiding value for those who would seek to follow God. The law does not function to empower salvation or holiness but rather it serves as a contrast, a compliment, and a custodian to the gospel. To come prepared for the sermon take time this week to read and to meditate upon Galatians 3:19-25, Psalm 119, Romans 7:7-14, 2 Corinthians 3:7-11, and this article on the law.

As we gather to worship our loving Father this Lord’s day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “From All That Dwell Below the Skies”, the Acclamation of Praise “Before the Throne of God Above”, and the Hymn of Response “In Christ Alone”. Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
