The Peace of God’s Terrifying Voice
Series: A Song For Every Season: A Study in the Psalms Scripture: Psalm 29:1–11
How are we to have peace in a world filled with storms? I remember moving from Washington State, where we had plenty of rain but very few storms, to Georgia, where an evening lighting storm was almost a nightly occurrence in the summer. Following a particularly bad storm in Columbus, Georgia my father and I went out to investigate the damage. I was awestruck that wind could topple over buildings and tear trees up from the ground. I was also a bit frightened. What if the storm came to our home? What if our trees were blown over? It is an unnerving reality to realize that in the face of a storm there is very little that we can do to control the situation. This week hurricane Laura is expected to make landfall in Texas and Louisiana. By the time you read this you may already know the damage that it inflicted upon these states. Despite all of our technology and advancements we still cannot control the weather and that makes us fearful. In our Psalm for this week we are told that the Lord is the one who controls the storm. Not only that, but that he makes himself known through the storm. While this whirlwind is frightening to those who do not trust in the Lord, those who look to him in faith can have great peace in the midst of the storm because they know and trust the God who controls the wind and the wave. To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and to meditate upon Psalm 29, Exodus 19:16-20, Job 40:7-9, Psalm 18:6-19, Isaiah 6:1-7, Mark 4:35-41, and Revelation 4, 11:19.
