Life is a Miracle

Series: A Song For Every Season: A Study in the Psalms Scripture: Psalm 104:1–35

Last week we celebrated the ascension of Christ which occurred forty days following the resurrection. Ten days later, or fifty days following the resurrection, the ascended Christ sent upon his people the promised Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. The Lord Jesus promised that he would send the Holy Spirit upon the Church so that they might proclaim the gospel to the ends of the earth. And on the day of Pentecost that promise came to pass. As the disciples where gathered together the Holy Spirit was poured out upon them and they began preaching the good news of repentance and forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ. And the Church was born. Our Psalm for this Sunday is the traditional Psalm that is read on Pentecost Sunday. Particularly verse 30 which says,

“When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.”(Psalm 104:30 ESV)

In this verse the Church has seen a witness of the life renewing power of the Holy Spirit. That is, the people of God have seen from Psalm 104 that life, and in particular new life in Christ, is not the work of man but rather is the gracious and miraculous work of the Holy Spirit. To be prepared for the sermon take time this week to read and to meditate upon Psalm 104, Genesis 1:2; 2:7, Ezekiel 37:1-10, Matthew 6:25-34, Acts 1:8-9, 2:1-47, Romans 8:1-7, and this article on Pentecost.

As we gather to worship the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit this Lord’s day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “Praise to the Lord the Almighty,” the Acclamation of Praise “Spirit of the Living God” and the Hymn of Response “It is Well With My Soul.” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
