Without a record of what the Lord has done, we can become discouraged and ungrateful. The great Baptist minister, Charles Spurgeon, once wrote, “I have sometimes said, when I have become the prey of doubting thoughts, ‘Well, now, I dare not doubt whether there be a God, for I can look back in my diary, and say, On such a day, in the depths of trouble, I bent my knee to God, and or ever I had risen from my knees, the answer was given me.’” A written record of the Lord’s work in our lives can be a helpful reminder of His grace and fatherly care for us. Thus in Numbers 33 we come to the travel log of Israel. It begins in Egypt, lists each stop the Israelites made during the forty-year wanderings, then ends in Canaan. It is a record not only of Israel’s travels but also a testimony of the Lord’s faithfulness to guide His people, reminding us of God’s work to bring His people safely home. To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and to meditate upon Numbers 33, Deuteronomy 4:9, 1 Samuel 7:12, Psalm 103:6-14, and Westminster Confession of Faith 17.
