Preparing for the Lord's Day

Searching for a Heroine

As the father of four young girls, I am always looking for good female role models; women who display characteristics of faith and courage. We all need people to whom we can look for guidance and direction. We need people who we may emulate. However, it has been rather difficult to find such heroines for my daughters. This might seem surprising since now more than ever women are portrayed as the heroes of television shows and movies. You have Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman, and She Hulk in the superhero realm. And many of our real-life female heroes are elevated because of their musical talent, political achievements, or athletic prowess. However, it is not character but achievement that is celebrated. And many of these celebrated figures have very poor character, indeed.

Yet in our passage for this Mother’s Day, we have a clear example of what it means to act as a heroine. Not merely to achieve, but to do that which is pleasing to the Lord with faith and courage. We come to the opening chapter of Exodus in which we see strong female characters resisting the most powerful earthly force, Pharaoh. And despite his threats each of these women act to protect, bear, and offer life to a dying world. And what we will see in an example of what it means to be a true heroine. To come prepared for the sermon take time this week to read and to meditate upon Exodus 1:15-2:10, Genesis 3:15-16, 1 Samuel 1:24-28, Luke 1:26-38; 2:33-35, Hebrews 11:23, and this article on looking up to heroes.

As we gather to worship our loving Father this Mother’s Day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “Praise The Lord, Ye Heavens, the Acclamation of Praise “Who Is On the Lord’s Side?” and the Hymn of Response “Jesus Shall Reign.Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
