In verse 5 of Numbers 17, the Lord makes very clear His intentions. He says, “…I will make to cease from me the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against you.”
(ESV). The people of Israel continue to pursue the path of grumbling against the Lord. They have rebelled against His commands and they have sought to cast off His anointed leaders. Despite the Lord’s judgment of these actions the people continue to rebel. However, here in chapter 17, the Lord declares that He will end the grumbling of the people through providing a sign. This sign is not a sign of judgment but rather a sign of hope. The Lord will cause the staff of Aaron to give forth buds of life though the staff itself has no life within. Through this sign, the Lord shows His people that even though they have no life within them they can have great hope. For the Lord, himself, will bring life out of death. In the midst of their hardship and disappointments, He will give them the hope of life. To come prepared for the sermon take time this week to read and to meditate upon Numbers 17, Psalm 42-43, Hebrews 11:1 and Westminster Confession of Faith 18.2.
As we gather to worship the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit this Lord’s day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds”, the Acclamation of Praise “Rejoice, the Lord Is King” and the Hymn of Response “Be Thou My Vision” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
Parking on Memphis Avenue
Believe it or not, part of our gospel witness includes our parking habits. In order to love and serve our neighbors well, we are asking everyone not to park on Memphis Avenue on Sundays for worship and to be mindful of the cones we put out. We have posted a parking map on our website, which highlights the available parking for Sunday mornings. Thanks for your help in this important area.
