Preparing For The Lord's Day

Preparing for the Lord's Day

To testify under oath in a court of law, you are first called to raise your right hand and swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Lying under oath subjects you to criminal penalty for perjury. If oaths to tell the truth were not upheld, the result would be injustice, corruption and chaos. But there is security in a society where vows are taken seriously and a person’s word is binding. In our passage for this Sunday, we come to a section of Numbers that outlines the importance of keeping our oaths to the Lord. We will see that, ultimately, the keeping of an oath not only provides security within a society, but it is also the very basis of our eternal security of salvation. To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and to meditate upon Numbers 30, Psalm 65:1, Ecclesiastes 5:1-7, Matthew 5:33-37, Hebrews 6:13-20 and Westminster Confession of Faith 22.

As we gather to worship the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit this Lord’s day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “We Gather Together,” the Acclamation of Praise “And Can It Be That I Should Gain” and the Hymn of Response “May the Peoples Praise You.”  Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
