Preparing For The Lord's Day

Preparing for the Lord's Day

 Jesus Is Better

This past February during the Super Bowl an ad campaign was launched entitled, “He Gets Us.” A private group of Christian businessmen invested millions of dollars into producing and airing these provocative commercials that explore how Jesus sympathizes with us in our needs and weaknesses. Each commercial features a series of photos in which people are in some distress and then ends with the tagline “He Gets Us.” I am ambivalent about the effectiveness of these commercials to draw people to Christ and the political message embedded in the topics they covered. However, there is truth in the statement that Jesus gets us. He is not a God who is separated from his people and their troubles. Rather the word of God teaches us that he can sympathize with us because he has undergone all the same temptations that we endure.

In our passage for this week, the author explores how it is that Jesus gets us. He shows us that because Jesus faced our fears, paid our debts, and suffered our temptations he can save his people to the uttermost. To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and to meditate upon Hebrews 2:14-18, Exodus 28:9-12, 1 Corinthians 15:54-57, Galatians 2:20, 1 Timothy 2:5, 2 Timothy 1:10, and Westminster Confession of Faith 8

As we gather to worship the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit this Lord’s Day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “O Lord, How Shall I Meet You,” the Acclamation of Praise, “Before the Throne of God Above,” and the Hymn of Response “He Will Hold Me Fast.” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
