Acts
Last week, we saw Paul and his company survive a 14 day hurricane that battered and beat their ship to a pulp. As the last of the survivors dragged themselves onto shore, all 276 souls had been saved as God promised. Every last sailor, soldier and traveller had made it to land. You can almost imagine everyone kissing the ground and rejoicing that their long ordeal was over. They were alive, but that presented it’s own challenge. They were on an island with nothing left. Everything had been lost at sea. They were wet and it was cold. What would happen next? What would they find there?
Luke records three encounters that Paul has after landing on Malta. In each of these encounters, we’ll see two common themes…the themes of watching and welcoming. And to help us better understand the significance of these two themes, we’ll look at our text under three headings. First, the world watches Christians. Second, Christians watch over the world, and third, Christians watch over Christians who watch over the world. To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and meditate upon Acts 28:1-16, 1 Samuel 16:7, Luke 9:23-25, Acts 14:8-12, Luke 10:5-9, and Romans 1:11-12.
As we gather this coming Lord's Day, may our Father find worshippers who are worshipping him in spirit (inflamed hearts) and in truth (informed minds). We will join our voices as one as we sing the Hymn of Praise “O Father You Are Sovereign,” the Acclamation of Praise “Praise, My Soul, The King of Heaven,” and the Hymn of Response “What'er My God Ordains Is Right.” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives so that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
