Courage amid Discouragement

Pastor: David Weber Series: Acts Scripture: Acts 18:1–17

Acts

There are moments in the Christian life when faithfulness feels exhausting rather than triumphant. You do what the Lord has called you to do, you press on in obedience, and yet the road seems to grow harder rather than easier. Elijah knew that road well. After standing boldly on Mount Carmel, he fled into the wilderness, weary, afraid, and alone. He sat under a broom tree and asked the Lord to take his life. But before God corrected Elijah, before He spoke to him, He gave him bread and water and allowed him to rest. The Lord met His discouraged servant not with rebuke, but with quiet care. Many of us recognize that place—not dramatic rebellion, but deep weariness; not unbelief, but discouragement. We keep going, but we wonder how long we can last.

In Acts 18:1–17, we meet the apostle Paul in a similar season. He arrives in Corinth after repeated trials. He is alone, opposed, and seemingly pressed to the limits of his strength. He works with his hands to support himself, faces rejection from the synagogue, and bears the weight of ongoing resistance to the gospel. Yet this passage shows us how the Lord encourages His servants when discouragement threatens to silence them. God provides companions at just the right time, supplies what Paul needs to continue the work, and ultimately speaks a word of promise and presence that steadies his soul: “Do not be afraid… for I am with you.” This text reminds us that the Lord sustains His people not only through outward success, but through His providence, His people, and His sure promises. He gives us courage in the midst of discouragement so that His gospel will continue to go forth, even when the work feels heavy.

To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and to meditate upon Acts 18:1-7, 1 Kings 19:4-8, Psalm 66:10-12, Isaiah 41:10, Matthew 28:18-20, 2 Corinthians 4:7-9, 16-18, Galatians 6:9, and this article on Distress.

As we gather to worship the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit this Lord’s day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “Come, Thou Almighty King,” the Acclamation of Praise, “My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less,” and the Hymn of Response “By Faith.” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
