Acts
Sitting on my bookshelf is a picture of my family in front of the famous abbey, Mont Saint-Michel, in Normandy, France. The abbey rests atop a rocky tidal island, an awe-inspiring structure of both beauty and historical significance. But it was not built overnight. The first sanctuary was established in 708 AD, and from that point onward, generation after generation added to the foundation that was laid. For several hundred years, work continued, and from the 10th to the 13th centuries, major additions were constructed, including the imposing Gothic chapel known as La Merveille, “The Marvel.”
The story of Mont Saint-Michel reminds us that growth, whether of a building, a life, or a church, is often gradual, shaped by persistence, patience, and careful attention to the foundation. In Acts 14, we see the same principle at work in the growth of the early church. Paul and Barnabas proclaim the gospel, and faith takes root in each city. Hardship and opposition soon arise, yet these trials strengthen the disciples. The apostles remain with them, teaching, encouraging, and appointing elders to care for the flock. And what we will see is that if we are to grow, we must submit ourselves to the same divine process. To come prepared for worship, take time this week to read and meditate upon Acts 14:1-28, Ephesians 4:11-16, Philippians 1:12, Colossians 1:28, 1 Thessalonians 1:5-10, Titus 1:5, 1 Peter 1:6-7, and this article on Christian Growth.
As we gather this third Sunday of Advent, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “Joy to the World”, the Acclamation of Praise “Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates!”, and the Hymn of Response “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
