Who's in Charge?

Pastor: David Weber Series: Acts Scripture: Acts 9:1–19

Acts

Who is really in charge of the Church? At times, it can seem as though no one is. Divisions arise, leaders fail, and confusion spreads. Throughout history, many have claimed authority—kings, popes, pastors, even whole denominations insisting they alone are the true Church. But Scripture reminds us of a far greater truth: Christ Himself is the only head of His Church (Eph. 1:22).

We see this truth clearly displayed in Acts 9. Saul was the Church’s fiercest enemy, determined to destroy it. Yet Christ sovereignly intervened, saving him, calling him to apostleship, and uniting him to the very body he once sought to destroy. No one else would have welcomed Saul into fellowship, but Christ alone. And this passage serves to strengthen our confidence in the Church. The health, growth, and unity of the church do not ultimately rest on human leaders, but on Christ, who is faithful to save, to call, and to bring His people together into one body.

To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and meditate on Acts 9:1-19, Psalm 2, Ephesians 1:15-23, Colossians 1:15-20, 1 Timothy 1:12-17 and Westminster Confession of Faith 25.

As we gather to worship our loving Father this Lord’s Day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “Praise the Lord, Ye Heavens Adore Him.” the Acclamation of Praise “Before the Throne of God Above,” and the Hymn of Response “And Can It Be.” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
