Acts
Over the last several weeks, the nation has watched the Senate’s confirmation hearings for President Trump’s cabinet nominees. The process is meant to ensure that the individuals the President selects to lead various government departments are suitable for the job. Ideally, Senators ask questions about a candidate’s policy positions and qualifications. Through these hearings, the Senate ultimately votes either to confirm or reject the nominee.
In 1989, George H. W. Bush’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, John Tower, was famously rejected after allegations of excessive drinking and ethical concerns derailed his nomination. On the other hand, this past week, Marco Rubio was unanimously confirmed as Trump’s Secretary of State following his hearing. When someone is entrusted with great power and authority, it is crucial that their qualifications are verified.
As Peter continues his Pentecost sermon, he moves to confirm that Jesus of Nazareth is the true Lord and Messiah for there is no identity more important to be assured of. Yet Jesus’ confirmation does not come from a panel of Senators or a conclave of bishops. His confirmation does not come from men at all. Rather, Peter argues that Jesus has been confirmed by the work of God through His miracles, His death, and His resurrection. In these acts, God has unmistakably declared Jesus as Lord. To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and meditate upon Acts 2:22-24, Psalm 16:10, Isaiah 53:10, Luke 9:18-22, John 10:37-38, Romans 1:4, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, and Westminster Confession of Faith 8.2.
As we gather to worship our loving Father this Lord’s Day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “Come, Thou Almighty King,” the Acclamation of Praise “My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less,” and the Hymn of Response “By Faith.” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives so that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
