Gospel Renewal in the Church

Pastor: David Weber Series: Mission Vision Values Scripture: Ephesians 2:19–22

Gospel Renewal

Over the last few weeks, we have been focusing on the mission statement of our church. We have broken it down in the following manner:

  1. The “Why” – The Glory of God and the Good of His People
  2. The “What” – Gospel Renewal
  3. The “How” – Spirit-Empowered Worship, Discipleship, and Mission

This week, we turn to the “Where” of our mission statement. Where are we to see Gospel Renewal take hold? We will address this question in two sermons. This week, I will explain from Ephesians 2:19-22 that Gospel Renewal must begin in the Church. The Church is the realm of God’s enlivening work. It is within the Church that we experience the greatest expressions of worship and discipleship. And it is from the Church that we are sent out on mission. However, as we will see next week, Gospel Renewal does not stop in the Church but spreads outward in ever-increasing victory until the day when the glory of the Lord covers the earth as the waters cover the sea. Yet if we do not maintain the primacy of the Church as the locus of God’s renewing work, then our desire for the gospel to spread will be in vain. Therefore, we, as the body of Christ, must continue to grow together toward ever-increasing maturity in the Lord.

To prepare your hearts for the sermon, take some time this week to read and meditate on Ephesians 2:19-22, Psalm 22:3, Isaiah 66:18-20, Matthew 18:20, 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, Philippians 3:20, 1 Peter 2:4-5, and Westminster Confession of Faith 25

As we gather to worship our loving Father this Lord’s Day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “All People that On Earth Do Dwell,” the Acclamation of Praise “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less,” and the Hymn of Response “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken.Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
