The How of Our Mission

Pastor: David Weber Series: Mission Vision Values Scripture: Matthew 28:16–20

Gospel Renewal

Following the resurrection, Jesus gave His disciples what we now call the Great Commission in Matthew 28:

"And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’" (Matthew 28:18–20 ESV)

As we continue to focus on Rivermont's mission, we must ask, "How does our stated mission align with Jesus’ commission to the Church?" When we reflect on this passage, we see that Jesus outlines the process by which the mission of Gospel Renewal unfolds. The central command is to make disciples, and there are three essential steps toward fulfilling this mission:

  1. Go – We are called to go out into the world, spreading the gospel.
  2. Baptize – We enter the worshiping community through baptism, identifying with Christ.
  3. Teach – We grow in our faith through discipleship, learning to obey all that Christ has commanded.

In our church's mission, we express these steps as worshipdiscipleship, and mission. We come into the worshiping community through baptism, we mature in our faith through discipleship, and we are sent into the world to live on mission, glorifying God in all aspects of life.

This Sunday, we’ll explore how we, as a church, can faithfully execute our mission in alignment with Christ's Great Commission. To prepare your hearts for the sermon, take some time this week to read and meditate on Matthew 28:16-20, Isaiah 6:8, Luke 24:44-49, John 20:21, Acts 1:18, 1 Peter 2:9, and this article on the Great Commission

As we gather to worship our loving Father this Lord’s Day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name.” the Acclamation of Praise “Romans Doxology,” and the Hymn of Response “O Church, Arise.Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
