September 20, 2020 Speaker: David Weber Series: A Song For Every Season: A Study in the Psalms

Scripture: Psalm 125:1–125:5

When we come to Psalm 125 we are reminded of two fundamental truths. 1) The world is a dangerous place. 2) The Lord is a sure place of refuge. Inherent in life is risk. When you open your front door and venture out into the world there are no guarantees that you will return unharmed. Accidents, disease, and violence are a real part of this world. It is not merely the existence of Covid-19 that makes the world a dangerous place. For generations prior and for generations to come this world will pose a threat to human health and life. Nevertheless, the world is the realm that we must inhabit. It is the place we are called to go. The Lord Jesus prayed for his people who are called to live in this world the following words,

“I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.” (John 17:15 ESV)

The physical dangers and risks inherent in human existence are not the real threats to human life and flourishing. Rather the true threat to life is sin. For we will all die yet only those who take refuge in the Lord Jesus Christ will find life beyond death. Jesus prays not that we would be spared the threat of this world, but rather we would be protected from the threat of the evil one. What we will see in our text for this Sunday is that we can all face the risks of this life with confidence and trust in the Lord because he surrounds, protects, and leads all his people. To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and to meditate upon Psalm 125, Psalm 46; 121,  Matthew 10:28, John 17, and Hebrews 2:14-15

As we gather to worship the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit this Lord’s day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “To God be the Glory, the Acclamation of Praise, “There is a Redeemer,” and the Hymn of Response “Before the Throne of God Above.” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
