Coronavirus Update #9 (5/18/20)

coronavirus alert

“Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy! For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared, A great king over all the earth” (Psalm 47:1-2).

Dear Rivermont Family and Friends,

With much prayer and collaboration, praise God for several worship opportunities this coming Sunday, May 24. In our sanctuary, worship services will be at  8:00 AM and 11:00 AM (and later in the day as necessary) with each service lasting less than one hour.  For those who need to remain at home, we will continue to have on-line worship available.

Pastor Brett has provided a helpful video to explain our process in the weeks ahead.  Click here for his helpful comments.  While following these guidelines to the best of our ability, may we all “put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony” (Colossians 3:14).

General Worship Guidelines

  • With Governor Ralph Northam’s announcement that churches may operate at 50% capacity while maintaining social distancing, we will limit each service to 150 participants. Each pew will be clearly marked to allow sitting with required social distancing (though family units may sit beside each other in the same row). Click here to see a diagram entitled “Sanctuary Seating and Entry/Exit.”
  • Sign-up for worship will be necessary to ensure we stay within 50% seating capacity and to honor appropriate health considerations for all.  If all time slots become filled, we will add an additional service. Look for a separate email with sign-up instructions.
  • Currently, only the sanctuary will be open for worship with entry from Rivermont Avenue through the three double doors on the front portico. Ushers will be available to allow entry to restrooms and the Cheatham Center as necessary. The sanctuary will be cleaned after each service.
  • We ask you to arrive no sooner than 20 minutes before each service and leave the campus immediately after each service.

Discerning Worship Options

For our ministry and reference, our three service options are coded Red, Yellow, and Green. Please prayerfully consider what option is best for you and your family. Click here to see a color-coded frame of upcoming worship services to help you in your decision process.

Red Service – Online Worship Service

  • For those who desire to stay home for any reason
  • For those who have compromised health
  • For those who are displaying any symptoms
  • For those who are quarantined

Yellow Service – 8:00 a.m.

  • First service of the day to provide lowest possibility of contamination
  • Cloth face coverings required for everyone over the age of 2
  • For those who are at higher risk or who desire an abundance of caution

Green Service – 11:00

  • Face covering optional, yet encouraged
  • For those who are at lower risk

Following Virginia Guidelines

We will be following the VA guidelines in all of our services. Here are a few notable precautions:

  • Sign-ups to ensure a 150-capacity limit
  • Entering/exiting through sanctuary doors only (rest of the building will remain closed)
  • Ushers wearing cloth face covering
  • Social distancing seating pattern
  • No hymnals or pew Bibles
  • Bulletins on seats
  • Limited singing and responsive readings
  • No passing of the peace nor passing of collection plates
  • Row by row dismissal by ushers

Ongoing Discipleship and Care

God has blessed on-line Zoom discipleship groups.  They will remain our primary means of gathering until we can open the building safely, with cleaning procedures in place.  As our timeline for reopening things like Sunday School and Children’s Ministry includes navigating subsequent Virginia phase requirements, please remain in prayer.

  • Zoom  Adult Sunday School classes will meet at 9:30 AM.  Please explore available classes on our website by clicking here.  If you would like to join a committed Zoom Sermon Discussion Group, please fill out the on-line form by clicking here
  • The Men’s Dawn Patrol gathers by Zoom on Tuesday mornings at 6:30 AM, and the Women’s Oasis Bible Studies meet on Thursday evenings at 7:00 PM.
  • While many are praying fervently for our students, children, and infants, Children’s Church and the nursery remain closed until we can minister safely.
  • For care and outreach, our primary connection continues to be through faithful elders and deacons, together with loving members reaching out to one another with the love of Christ.  We give God thanks for our officers and prayer teams who have been faithful in ministry. May the LORD continue to bless us as we demonstrate the love of Christ!
  • The pastors remain humbled and grateful for the ways that our officers have been communicating with the ministry staff of the church.    With reports from our elders, deacons and caring members, Janet Freshour provides daily updates for pastoral prayer and follow-up.  You may email your prayer requests to Janet by clicking here

Praying for Wisdom and Unity

While the church campus remains closed as we continue to seek best practices to protect our community and staff, please remain in prayer for God’s wisdom and blessing as we gather to worship in our sanctuary. Please remain in prayer for our ongoing faith and trust in the God Who will direct our steps.   Praise God for His blessing of unity as we move forward.

In Christ,

Pastor Ron, together with Pastors David, Brett, Mike, and Shane
