Preparing for the Lord's Day
Gospel Renewal
“What is the chief end of man?” This may be the most famous catechism question, and it’s one that I know the majority of our church can answer: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.” When our vision team worked on Rivermont’s new mission statement, we knew this truth had to be reflected in our documents. That’s why the very first line of our new mission statement reads, “For the glory of God and the good of His people…”
Scripture is clear that whatever we do, we are to do it for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). It also makes it clear that the glory of God is not at the expense of His people; rather, it results in their good (Ephesians 1:3). What good news! God’s purpose to glorify His name means the blessing of His people.
This week, we will begin our study of Rivermont’s mission, vision, and value statements. Our hope is that as we explore each element of these statements, we will be united as a body in our aim to see God glorified through His work of Gospel renewal. To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and meditate on Ephesians 1:3-14, Psalm 84:10, Isaiah 43:6-7, John 17:1-4, Romans 9:22-23; 11:36, and Rivermont’s Mission, Vision, and Value statements.
As we gather to worship our loving Father this Lord’s Day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “Praise the Lord, Ye Heavens Adore Him.” the Acclamation of Praise “Before the Throne of God Above,” and the Hymn of Response “And Can It Be.” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
