Acts
The gospel is both good news and disruptive news. Following his Damascus Road conversion and calling, Saul begins to boldly proclaim that Jesus is the Son of God and the promised Christ. This message is at the very heart of the Christian faith. Jesus is divine in His nature and saving in His mission. Yet, this light-giving message did not bring peace and comfort to everyone who heard it. Instead, Saul’s preaching provoked fierce opposition. Many even plotted to take his life. The true gospel often brings opposition, as the world resists the claims of Christ. Despite this opposition a clear and faithful proclamation of the gospel also brings health to the church. For the gospel is the very words of life. Acts 9 concludes with this beautiful summary: “the church… walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied” (v. 31).
In our own day, the temptation is strong to soften the gospel so that no one is offended. We are encouraged to avoid controversial statements about theology or sin so that no one is offended or angered. But this passage reminds us that flourishing gospel relationships come not by avoiding the truth, but by proclaiming it clearly and trusting God to bring the growth.
To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and meditate on Acts 9:20-31, Matthew 10:34-39, John 15:18-21, 2 Corinthians 2:14-17, Galatians 1:11-24, and 1 Thessalonians 2:1-16.
As we gather to worship our loving Father this Lord’s Day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “All People That on Earth Do Dwell” the Acclamation of Praise “Jesus Paid it All,” and the Hymn of Response “Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy.” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
