Preparing For The Lord's Day

Preparing for the Lord's Day

Christian Resistance

1 Peter Sermon Series

Stephen Charnock once wrote, “The goodness of God makes the devil a polisher, while he intends to be a destroyer.” The Lord Jesus warned his followers that the devil has come to steal and kill and destroy (John 10:10), yet the Lord has come to bring life and bring it abundantly. Often, we are blind to the spiritual forces at work in our lives. We fail to see that there is a war being waged over our soul. For the devil is actively seeking to undermine the work of God to conform us to the image of Christ. However, by the power of Christ’s victory on the cross each attempt by the enemy to destroy our faith becomes an opportunity for Christians to grow in their faith. We resist Satan’s work by trusting Christ to turn it for our good. To come prepared for the sermon take time this week to read and to meditate upon 1 Peter 5:5-9, Isaiah 54:7, Mark 14:37-38, Luke 22:31-34, John 8:44;10:10, Romans 16:10, Ephesians 6:10-18, James 4:6-10, and the online article Who Is Our Enemy

This week we will celebrate that sacrament of the Lord’s Supper during our worship service. As we receive the elements of bread and wine we look in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ. For as we physically receive the signs of the Lord’s body and blood, spiritually we feed upon him and all his benefits. Our hymns for this week include “All People That on Earth Do Dwell,” How Deep the Father’s Love for Us,” and “And Can It Be That I Should Gain.”

If you’re going to be out of town this Sunday, let me encourage you to listen to the sermon online, through the Rivermont App, (available at the App Store or Google Play), or you can download the REPC podcast, which will be delivered to your mobile device.
