Preparing for the Lord's Day

Kingdoms in Conflict

When April and I were engaged she decided to make a special dinner. She thought everything was going as planned. But the oil was overheated and when she dropped the chicken into the pan it instantly burned. Smoke filled the kitchen and the fire alarm started blaring. In an attempt to air out her apartment April opened the back door. Little did she realize a gang of cats was gathering to the smell of burnt chicken. When I arrived I could hear the fire alarm blaring. I rushed in to find poor April in an apartment filled with burnt chicken smoke, a fire alarm that wouldn’t go off, and a herd of cats searching for scraps. For April, who was trying to prove her wifely abilities, it was a totally hopeless situation. She had a great intention, but a small mistake led to great frustration.

In our passage for this Sunday, we find a man who had a great intention. His desire was to find something for his fellow prophets to eat. But something goes horribly wrong. A meal that was meant to nourish turns into a poison. However, through His prophet Elisha the Lord brings redemption to this spoiled dinner party. And what we will learn is that we can trust the Lord with the ruined meals of our life because he is seeking to make all things new. To come prepared for the sermon take time this week to read and meditate upon 2 Kings 4:38-41, Psalm 37:25, Matthew 6:11, 25-26, and Revelation 21:5.

As we gather to worship our loving Father this Mother’s day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “Praise The Lord, Ye Heavens, the Acclamation of Praise “When I Survey” and the Hymn of Response “Jesus Shall Reign.Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, receive it in faith, love and treasure it in our hearts, and practice it in our lives so that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
