Preparing for the Lord's Day
Gospel Humility
This Sunday we will have an opportunity to honor the ministry of Pastor Ron Cox as he approaches his retirement at the end of the month. We invite you to attend our Sunday morning service and a dinner to honor Ron and Elke on Sunday evening from 5:30-7:30. Ron has served Rivermont faithfully for over two decades. He has led with humility that is rooted in the hope and the power of the gospel –ever looking to the example of the Lord Jesus Christ. The elements of this week’s service have been hand selected by Ron including our passage from Philippians 2 –his favorite for life in ministry.
Philippians 2 begins with what scholars call the Christological Hymn. It is a passage that poetically expresses the power of Christ’s victory as rooted in his obedient humility. In a turn that we would not expect, the most powerful path of ministry is not force or persuasion. It is not self-aggrandizement or self-promotion, but rather the most powerful path in ministry is humility. And what we will see from our text is that if we would walk in humility our ministry must be generated, oriented, and motivated by the gospel. To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and meditate upon Philippians 2:1-11, Proverbs 16:18, Mark 10:35-45, James 4:6, 1 Peter 5:5, and this article on humility.
As we gather to worship our loving Father this Lord’s Day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,” the Acclamation of Praise “Before the Throne of God Above,” and the Hymn of Response “In Christ Alone.” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives so that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
