Preparing for the Lord's Day
Better
If you've ever been to the ocean, you've probably heard about the danger of rip currents. They are strong enough to pull even the best swimmer out to sea, and if you don't know how to swim out of one, you'll likely be swept away.
Simarly, the Hebrews are in danger of being swept away (drifting) in a cultural rip tide because of the cultural and familial pressures to reject Jesus and return to Judaism. In our text this Sunday, the writer of Hebrews is providing a proactive/reactive response to the situation they find themselves in and how to avoid/get out of the drift they're headed in. In Hebrews 2:1-4, we'll see that his exhortation is to pay attention to the message they've already heard as well as those who've attested to that message and the accompanying signs of God's power to that message.
As we gather to be reminded of and to rejoice in the finished work of Christ on our behalf, we will sing the hymns: "Tell Out My Soul, The Greatness of the Lord," "How Deep The Father's Love for Us" and "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing." Let's prepare our hearts and mind, even now, to worship the Lord in spirit and in truth.
