June 7th - Preparing for the Lord's Day & A Call to Lament, Fasting, and Prayer
Preparing for the Lord's Day
What is man? In some way or another we have all been face with this question over the past week and a half. For we have been confronted with a blatant disregard for the sanctity of the life of a fellow human being. We have been reminded of the pain and the struggle of racial tension that continues to plague our nation. We have seen how this tension can erupt into looting and rioting. We have seen again what history continually bears out that those with authority are willing to use their power to impose their will even if it means violating the dignity or life of others. Providentially, this Sunday we come to Psalm 8. At the very center of this Psalm is the question, “What is man…?” To answer this question the Psalmist directs us to the majesty of the Lord, the grace of the Lord, and the mandate the Lord gives to man to glorify him. What we will see is that because man is the image of God we must honor and protect all human life. To come prepared for the sermon take time this week to read and to meditate upon Psalm 8, Genesis 1:26-30; 4:1-10; 9:5-7, Hebrews 11:4; 12:24, 1 John 4:7-12 and Westminster Confession of Faith 4.
This week we will celebrate that sacrament of the Lord’s Supper during our worship service. As we receive the elements of bread and wine we look in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ. For as we physically receive the signs of the Lord’s body and blood, spiritually we feed upon him and all his benefits. Our hymns for this week include “All Creatures of Our God and King,” “For A Thousand Tongues,” and “Holy, Holy Holy”
