July 14, 2024 - Preparing for the Lord's Day
July 11, 2024Preparing for the Lord's Day
We continue our series entitled, Jesus, a friend of sinners. We move from the calling of Matthew and the celebratory party that followed with his friends (tax collectors and sinners) to another dinner party with Simon the Pharisee and his religious friends. It is quite a contrast to Matthew's party, where Jesus was the guest of honor. At Simon's dinner party, Jesus was an ill-treated guest. And yet there is another guest at the party whose presence and actions disrupted that party... and as we'll see, they were so needed.
As we look more closely at Jesus' encounter with this woman of the city, he is going to help us see our need for forgiveness as well as the high cost of forgiveness through a parable. Then the woman is going to help us see the transformative power of forgiveness in her life. It is this power that will help fuel our desire to help others know the forgiveness that is theirs in Christ Jesus. To prepare for our time in the Word, I would encourage you to not only read our sermon text, Luke 7:36-50, but also Luke 11:39, Matthew 15:18-19, Colossians 2:14-15.
As we seek to worship our great God in spirit and in truth, we will be guided by the hymns: "Christ Our Hope in Life and Death," "Jesus! What a Friend for Sinners!" and "How Sweet and Awesome Is The Place." We'll also be welcoming new members to the church, so be sure and greet them when you see them. I look forward to seeing you this Lord's Day.
