Preparing For The Lord's Day

Calming The Storm

As the forecast makes clear, a significant snowstorm is bearing down on us this weekend. And we prepare the best we can for these events. We run to the grocery store to buy milk and bread, we adjust our travel plans, and we stack up the firewood. Here at the Church, we are planning for what happens if the roads are blocked and services must be adjusted or even canceled. However, there comes a point at which preparation gives way to waiting. In the end, we don’t know exactly what is coming. Storms remind us how quickly circumstances can change and how little control we actually have once the wind begins to blow and the roads begin to freeze. Whether we stay home or venture out, we all feel that quiet unease that comes with knowing we are at the mercy of forces stronger than ourselves.

This Sunday’s passage in Luke 8 places us in the middle of a far more dangerous storm, one that threatened the lives of seasoned fishermen and left them crying out in fear. Yet that storm becomes the setting for two searching questions: “Who is this?” and “Where is your faith?” This Lord’s Day we will be reminded that Scripture does not deny the reality of storms, but it does reveal the One who is sovereign over them. The same Jesus who slept in the boat and spoke peace to the waves still calls His people to trust Him when life feels unpredictable, powerful, and out of control.

To be prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and to meditate upon Luke 8:22-25, Psalm 89:9; 107:28-30, Isaiah 43:2, Nahum 1:3-4, Job 38:8-11, Colossians 1:16-17, and Hebrews 4:15-16.

There is a good chance that in-person services will be canceled this Sunday. Therefore, prepare to participate in worship through our online service. And even though we may not be together physically, we will be together in Spirit as we worship and glorify the Lord!
