Preparing For The Lord's Day

Preparing for the Lord's Day

EXILES IN A FOREIGN LAND - 1 Peter Sermon Series

There are not many things that can cause a split in a family like a disputed inheritance. Relatives place their hope for a better future on the prospect of receiving a home or a sizable amount of cash from a deceased relative. However, when the details of the will are revealed there is often a perceived injustice. A sibling received more than her fair share. An unknown friend inherits the coveted summer house on the lake. A past debt or grievance is settled through a diminished inheritance. Or someone is completely “written out” of the will. When hope is unfulfilled it causes anger and bitterness and mistrust. When we place our hopes for a better future on anything earthly we often come away disappointed or grieved. Yet there is an inheritance that we can count on, one which will never be diminished. It is an inheritance of which we will never be “written out.” This is an inheritance that is secured for us by God Himself. To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and to meditate upon 1 Peter 1:4-5, Genesis 12:7, Psalm 105:7-11, Ephesians 1:14,18 and Westminster Confession of Faith 18.2

As we gather to worship our loving Father this Lord’s day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name!”, the Acclamation of Praise “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us,” and the Hymn of Response “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken.” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!

If you’re going to be out of town this Sunday, let me encourage you to listen to the sermon online (usually posted by Monday afternoon) or you can download the REPC podcast, which will be delivered to your mobile device.
