Preparing For The Lord's Day

Preparing for the Lord's Day

Acts

The year after I graduated from college was intense seeking the Lord’s will. With a degree in International Relations, I had hoped to work for the State Department. However, during a yearlong internship with a college ministry, I began to doubt my plans. I enjoyed ministry and grew in my knowledge of God’s Word, but I didn’t feel called to full-time ministry. April and I considered mission work. I talked to an Army recruiter and even thought about law school. Yet, no matter how much I prayed and reflected, I couldn’t find peace.

Unsure of what was next, I followed a friend to Charlotte and began attending Reformed Theological Seminary—not to train for ministry, but because I didn’t know what else to do. That step of faith, however, became the path to my call to vocational ministry. The Lord didn’t reveal my final destination, but He showed me the next step.

In this Sunday’s passage, Luke recounts the time between Christ’s ascension and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The apostles were instructed to return to Jerusalem and wait. But what were they to do while they waited? How could they discern the Lord’s will? What we’ll see in our passage is that to discern the next step in our walk with the Lord, we must submit to His will and trust in His providence

To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and meditate upon Acts 1:12-26, Psalm 37:5; 119:105, Proverbs 16:33, Ecclesiastes 11:1, Philippians 4:6-7, James 1:25, and Westminster Confession of Faith 5

As we gather to worship our loving Father this Lord’s Day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “All You That Fear Jehovah’s Name,” the Acclamation of Praise “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us”,” and the Hymn of Response “It is Well with My Soul.” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives so that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
