Preparing For The Lord's Day

Preparing for the Lord's Day

Our Psalm for this Sunday invites us to ask the question, “What is the nature of a blessed life?” Our culture presents us with a variety of different answers to the question of what constitutes a well lived or happy life. There is the take life by the horns approach. This says that the blessed life is one that is filled with adventure and risk. A person who has multiple stamps in her passport has lived a good life. Others take the minimalist approach to a good life. Life is about being simple and content. A well lived life is one that is uncomplicated and uncluttered. Some say that the good life consists of ease. In contrast others say the good life is the strenuous life.  There is the achiever approach, the education approach, and the builder approach to the good life.  Maybe the most common answer to the good life is family. The good life consists of being the super mom or the involved grandparent. How would you answer the question of what constitutes a good life? This week our Psalm will challenge us to define and pursue a life according to the precepts of God’s Word. To come prepared for the sermon take time this week to read and to meditate upon Psalm 112, Genesis 1:26-31, Psalm 34:11-14; 111; Proverbs 1:7, Matthew 5:3-12, John 12:25, Romans 8:29 and Westminster Shorter Catechism #1. Also, take time to look over this side by side comparison of Psalms 111 and 112.

As we gather to offer ourselves as living sacrifices to the Lord, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “Our God, Our Help in Ages Past” the Acclamation of Praise “My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less” and the Hymn of Response “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah.  Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
