Preparing For The Lord's Day

Preparing for the Lord's Day

The Advent season begins this Sunday. The basic meaning of advent is “coming” or “appearing,” so the Advent season in the Christian calendar is when we remember the first advent of Christ at His birth and look forward to His second advent when He will return to make all things new. This year our Advent sermon series will focus on the theme of light and how light shining in the darkness points us to the coming of Christ. This week our attention will be focused on the creation of light in Genesis 1. Here we will see that in the creation of light, God has revealed to us His glory, His joy, and His coming redemption. To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and to meditate upon Genesis 1:1-5, John 8:12, 1 Timothy 6:16, 1 John 1:5, and Westminster Shorter Catechism #1.

This week we will celebrate the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper during our worship service. As we receive the elements of bread and wine, we look in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ. For as we physically receive the signs of the Lord’s body and blood, by faith we spiritually feed upon Him and all His benefits. Our hymns for this week include “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” Joy to the World! The Lord Is Come,” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful.”

If you’re going to be out of town this Sunday, let me encourage you to listen to the sermon online (usually posted by Monday afternoon) or you can download the REPC podcast, which will be delivered to your mobile device.

As a reminder, please join us for our annual Hanging of the Greens service this Sunday evening at 6:00. During the service, our Sanctuary will be adorned with Christmas greens as we sing hymns, hear Scripture readings, and enjoy musical presentations by the Rivermont Youth Strings, Cherub Choir, and Sanctuary Choir. Pastor Ron will teach from Isaiah 60:1-3 in his sermon titled “Your Light Has Come!”
