Preparing for the Lord's Day

Puritan John Owen once wrote, “Do you mortify; do you make it your daily work; be always at it whilst you live; cease not a day from this work; be killing sin or it will be killing you.” This week we will return to our study Colossians picking up at Colossians 3:5-11. In these verses the Apostle Paul encourages us to, “put to death… what is earthly in you.” For much of this letter Paul has argued that worldly regulations have no power to keep us from sin. Nevertheless, sin is to be killed. It is to be mortified. The Lord has commanded the holiness of his people. Yet holiness does not come about through sin maintenance; hedging in behaviors through programs and regulations. Rather holiness comes through dying to sin and living to Christ. Those who have been joined to Christ through faith have been empowered by their union to put to death sinful earthly behaviors. To come prepared for the sermon take time this week to read and to meditate upon Colossians 3:5-17, James 1:14-15, Matthew 15:18 and Westminster Confession of Faith 13.

This week we will celebrate that sacrament of the Lord’s Supper during our worship service. As we receive the elements of bread and wine look in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ. For as we physically receive the signs of the Lord’s body and blood, spiritually we feed upon him and all his benefits. Our hymns for this week include “Christ is Made the Sure Foundation,” “Before the Throne of God Above,” and “For All the Saints”

If you’re going to be out of town this Sunday, let me encourage you to listen to the sermon online (usually posted by Monday afternoon) or you can download the REPC podcast, which will be delivered to your mobile device.
