Preparing For The Lord's Day

Amos

From the earliest days of human history, men have longed for a perfect society. Plato envisioned it in The Republic, the Romans spoke of a golden age to come, and through the centuries dreamers have promised a world free of suffering, want, and injustice. In more recent times, political movements such as communism claimed to hold the key to a new humanity, yet they led instead to tyranny and despair. Today, we are told that technologies like artificial intelligence will one day solve our deepest problems and deliver a kind of paradise. But no matter how lofty the promises or how powerful the tools, every human attempt at utopia inevitably ends in disappointment. The world is still broken, and our hearts remain corrupted by sin.

It is into this longing that the prophet Amos speaks a better word. In Amos 9:11–15, the Lord declares His covenant promises: the promised King who will reign forever (v. 11), the promised people who will be gathered from every nation (v. 12), and the promised land of abundant blessing and everlasting peace (vv. 13–15). Unlike the false hopes of men, these promises are sure, for they are fulfilled in Jesus Christ, tasted now in His church, and consummated when He returns to make all things new. True utopia is not found in human schemes but in the promised Kingdom of God. To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and to meditate upon Amos 9:11-15, Genesis 17:8, Deuteronomy 30:1-9, Psalm 72:17, Acts 15:13-18,
