April 20th, 2018 - Preparing for the Lord's Day
Preparing for the Lord's Day
Last week, in Numbers 13, we saw the report that was given concerning the land of Canaan. Ten of the twelve spies reported that the land devoured its people, it was filled with giants, and it was covered with fortified cities. Their conclusion? “We can’t possibly take this land!” Nevertheless, two of the spies reported that the land was fruitful and filled with good resources. While there were strong inhabitants the Lord had promised to be with his people and fight on their behalf. Their conclusion? “We are able to overcome it!” Who would the people believe? Who would they follow? Would they trust the voice of the ten naysayers? Or would they trust the good report brought by Caleb and Joshua? In chapter 14 we come to see the conclusion of this episode and how the people of Israel respond to these two different reports. To come prepared for the sermon, take time this week to read and to meditate upon Numbers 14, Deuteronomy 1:19-46, 1 Corinthians 10:1-13, Hebrews 3:7- 4:2 and Westminster Confession of Faith 17.3.
As we gather to worship the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit this Lord’s day, we will join our hearts in song, singing the Hymn of Praise “Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Wretched”, the Acclamation of Praise “O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus!” and the Hymn of Response “I Will Sing of My Redeemer” Let us come to worship this Sunday prepared to hear God’s Word, to receive it in faith, to love and treasure it in our hearts, and to practice it in our lives that we may continue to glorify and enjoy Him!
