PHILOSOPHY
We at Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church
believe the Bible teaches that the home is God's
primary context for children to learn and embrace Christian
teachings, values and behavior. We believe it is the parents'
role to be the primary spiritual caretakers of their children.
One of the foundational statements of Scripture for
communicating this understanding comes from Deuteronomy
6:4-9...
"Hear. 0 Israel: The Lord our God is one, Love the
Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you
today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your
children. Talk about them when you sit at home, when you walk
along the road, when you lie down, and when you get up. Tie
them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your
gates."
In this Scripture, we find a pattern for passing on
our faith ...
1. A parent's relationship with God is critical.
2. Parents are to instruct their children concerning God's
word and ways in the home.
3. Parents are to model the life of faith to their
children.
How do we prepare youth for Christian adulthood?
1. We encourage parents to be involved in any youth event.
2. We connect youth and integrate them into the Body of Christ.
Jonathan Edwards stated, "Every Christian family ought
to be as it were a little church consecrated to Christ, and
wholly influenced and governed by His rule. And family education
and order are some of the chief means of grace. If these fail,
all other means are likely to prove ineffectual. If these are
duly maintained, all the means of grace will be likely to
prosper and be successful."
