THE CHURCH LIBRARY
The library of Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church was
begun many years ago in answer to the need for resources to
supplement and strengthen the educational missionary and family
ministries of the church
Volunteers took on the task of organizing the material and
building a card catalog. Their problems were the same as those
confronting Melville Dewey at the turn of the 20th Century: How
could one make books and information easy to find, for without
such ready access, people would soon tire of useless browsing.
This was the problem of our church library in 1989, and we
decided to re-catalog the collection according to the Dewey
Decimal Classification, as commonly used in schools and
public libraries. Our goal was to computerize the library
holdings from the start, realizing that our children are growing
up with computers in the schools as well as home.
The library currently has three networked computers, much
like the arrangement of the Lynchburg Public Library. The
"server" is where all the cataloging is recorded,
along with the patron information. Two other computers access
the information on the server, one for circulations and the
other to serve the you as you make use of the library.
Current holdings include over 4300 books, videos and
audiotapes. This includes over 540 videocassettes and 230
audiocassettes. In addition, the library subscribes to over 20
periodicals. These are displayed, and available for checkout,
next to the circulation desk.
The library operation is under the direction of
the Christian Education Committee.
Library hours are:
Tuesday - Friday: 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM
