INTRODUCTION TO
RIVERMONT
Throughout our history Rivermont Evangelical
Presbyterian Church has sought to stand for, proclaim and
demonstrate the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ as it is
revealed in Scripture and interpreted by the Confessions of the
Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Over the years we have believed
without reservation that the Bible is the Word of God,
the only infallible rule of faith and practice. The present
officers and pastors of Rivermont Church gladly and
enthusiastically seek to continue to stand for and proclaim the
everlasting Gospel of Jesus Christ who is the same yesterday,
today and forever, and to apply it to our particular time and
place. Our theological position is best described as being both evangelical
and reformed.
We believe that we are here to worship and obey
God, and to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the
power of the Holy Spirit so that people will come to trust in
Christ, be incorporated into his church, grow in obedience to
him, and become involved in responsible service to the world.
We believe that our worship should be centered on the Triune
God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The primary
means God has provided for us to worship him is the preaching
and hearing of his Word. The same Word of God that
is written in the Scriptures is made visible in the Sacraments
of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Knowing that music
can be a strong aid to worship we encourage good congregational
singing of “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,” and
support excellent choir and musical group programs for children
and adults.
In our Christian Education we stress both a knowledge of the
content of the Bible and the importance of experiencing the
truth that is set forth in Scripture. We have Sunday School
classes for all ages. A very high proportion of the adults in
our congregation regularly attend Sunday School. There are
weekly Youth Groups for both Junior Highs and Senior
Highs. Summer Bible School is conducted for children and young
people the week following the closing of Lynchburg public
schools.
We are committed to living out the truth of Jesus Christ in
our human relationships. Therefore, we work hard to
develop a warm, caring fellowship with one another. A number of
home “Bible Study, Sharing and Prayer Groups,”
monthly circles of “Presbyterian Women,” a monthly
breakfast for the Men of the Church, and Family Night Suppers
for the whole congregation help us build these bonds.
Taking seriously the Great Commission of Jesus Christ,
we sustain a growing outreach both to Lynchburg and to the
world-at-large. We seek to do this by the proclamation of the
gospel to the lost, by various ministries to all sorts of
human need in the name of Christ, and by supporting a number of
both national and international missionaries.
